Manchester United claimed their first Premier League win of the season under pressure-hit manager Ruben Amorim, edging past Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford thanks to a dramatic 97th-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty.
United, reeling from a midweek League Cup humiliation against fourth-tier Grimsby, twice surrendered the lead before Fernandes struck deep into stoppage time following a VAR check for a foul on Amad Diallo.
The victory lifts the Red Devils to four points from their opening three matches and offers Amorim some respite heading into the international break. The Portuguese coach had questioned his future after the Grimsby defeat, describing the situation as one that “has to change.”
Amorim made bold calls by dropping goalkeeper Andre Onana after his midweek errors, while record signing Benjamin Sesko was again left on the bench.
United went ahead in the first half when Casemiro’s header rebounded off the bar and ricocheted in off Burnley’s Josh Cullen for an own goal. Amad Diallo should have doubled the advantage but missed a clear chance.
Burnley, largely subdued before the break, equalised on 55 minutes as Lyle Foster converted Jacob Bruun Larsen’s cross. Yet United responded instantly, with Bryan Mbeumo opening his account for the club by steering home Diogo Dalot’s delivery.
Defensive frailties resurfaced for United, however, as Jaidon Anthony levelled after Altay Bayindir failed to hold Loum Tchaouna’s strike. Sesko was introduced late on but squandered two headed chances.
The decisive moment came in stoppage time when Anthony was penalised for pulling Diallo inside the area. Fernandes, who had missed from the spot a week earlier, made no mistake this time to hand United a vital win.
Burnley remain on three points from their first three games, while United’s win provides a much-needed morale boost for Amorim’s under-fire side.
