A 37-year-old woman, Kofoworola Akanji, was granted bail on Wednesday after being arraigned before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos Island.
She faces allegations of publishing false and defamatory content about Nollywood actress and entrepreneur Lizzy Anjorin on her Facebook account.
Charged by operatives from the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, Akanji faces three counts: conspiracy, publication of fake news, and defamation. The offences reportedly occurred between 2023 and 2025.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Haruna Ibrahim told the court that Akanji and other unnamed bloggers spread false statements and rumors about Lizzy Anjorin on Facebook, knowingly publishing misleading information. Additionally, she allegedly posted images of the actress in a way that could incite public discontent and shared obscene content to drive social media engagement and financial gain.
These acts violate Sections 39, 57, and 150 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Akanji pleaded not guilty. While the prosecutor sought her remand, her lawyer argued that the charges are bailable.
After hearing both sides, Magistrate Wahab Balogun granted bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, alongside other conditions. The trial was adjourned to August 21, 2025.
