The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia South Senatorial Zone has officially collapsed its structure into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The announcement was made in Aba by the Abia South Zonal Chairman of APGA, Chief Charles Nwanyanwu, alongside the six local government chairmen of the party in the zone, during a meeting with the ADC State Chairman, Don Norman Obinna.
Nwanyanwu explained that the defection became necessary due to what he described as the “death of APGA in Abia State,” following years of leadership crises that crippled the party. He revealed that arrangements were already in place for APGA structures in Abia North and Abia Central to also merge with ADC.
According to him, the move had the backing of over 5,000 APGA members in Abia South.
“We have left APGA for ADC. There is no more APGA in Abia South. This was a collective decision of all members in the zone. We cannot continue with APGA’s endless crises. ADC is our choice, and we are happy to be here. APGA is dead in Abia,” Nwanyanwu declared.
He further recalled APGA’s decline, noting that the party once had 14 seats in the Abia House of Assembly in 2015, won a few in 2019, but today holds none.
On whether Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South on APGA’s platform, was consulted before the defection, Nwanyanwu dismissed his influence, saying the senator “does not command loyalty from APGA members in Abia South.”
Receiving the defectors, ADC State Chairman, Don Norman Obinna, described the development as a major boost for his party, assuring the new members of full integration.
He said ADC had become the “party to beat” in Abia, boasting of more than 300,000 registered members in the state, well above the 200,000 votes required to win a governorship election.
“There is nothing left in APGA. People are trooping into ADC because they believe in our message of good governance. By 2025, any politician who refuses to align with ADC will lose, including Governor Alex Otti and lawmakers at both state and national levels,” Obinna stated.
