The Ebonyi State Government has approved an upward review of the minimum wage for its civil servants from N70,000 to N90,000, effective immediately.
Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, announced the decision on Thursday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting.
According to Omebe, the increment reflects Governor Francis Nwifuru’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare. He stressed that the decision was not politically motivated but a continuation of the administration’s pro-worker policies.
“This government does not play politics with the welfare of workers. We have cleared the backlog of pensions and gratuities of state retirees from the creation of Ebonyi in 1996 till date. Verification of local government retirees is ongoing, and once concluded, payments will follow,” Omebe said.
The commissioner explained that if the government could fulfill such heavy financial responsibilities, an additional N20,000 wage increase for workers should not be seen as political. He further described the governor as a leader focused on building people and infrastructure, guided by the “people’s charter of needs” principle.
The EXCO also approved the enforcement of the eight-year tenure policy for directors in the state civil service, which will see permanent secretaries and directors who have completed the required tenure proceed on retirement.
