The Federal Government has appointed Fuji legend King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1 or K1 De Ultimate, as an ambassador for promoting proper airport security conduct.
The move follows the reduction of the singer’s six-month flight ban to one month after his recent altercation with a ValueJet flight crew at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In a statement on Wednesday via his X handle, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo said the decision was part of a broader plan to curb unruly behaviour in airports.
“FAAN will collaborate with the music star to engage him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward,” Keyamo announced.
According to the minister, KWAM 1 had shown “genuine remorse” over the incident, prompting the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to withdraw its criminal complaint and shorten his suspension.
Keyamo also confirmed that ValueJet’s Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, who were involved in the incident, will have their licences reinstated after completing a one-month suspension and a mandatory professional reappraisal.
While stressing that the clemency was granted on compassionate grounds, the minister maintained that the government remains committed to enforcing discipline in the aviation sector.
“We take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously, and we have decided to draw the line after these clemencies,” Keyamo stated.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Aviation has announced plans for a sector-wide retreat next week aimed at retraining security personnel and airline staff on how to de-escalate tense situations with passengers.
