Legendary Nollywood actor, Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, has died at the age of 70.

The news was confirmed on Friday by movie producer and executive, Seun Oloketuyi, in an Instagram post, revealing that the veteran thespian passed away earlier in the day.
“Popular actor Segun Remi, widely known as Chief Kanran, died Friday morning. Details soon,” Oloketuyi wrote.

A household name in the Yoruba film industry, Chief Kanran was celebrated for his distinctive style, refined elegance, love of luxury, sharp humour, and commanding performances that captivated audiences for decades across stage plays, television, and films.

In a 2020 interview with PUNCH, the veteran opened up about his decision to step away from the movie industry, citing internal politics and cliques within the profession.
“Some people in the industry see people like me as a threat because I will not do anything that is not professional, and that has made some people upset with me,” he said at the time.

Chief Kanran began his career on stage before making a mark on television through a popular NTA drama series, eventually rising to prominence in Yoruba cinema. His film credits include Ewe Orun, Aiye, Efunsetan Aniwura, Agbarin, and Bata Wahala, where he was often cast in regal or authoritative roles such as kings, chiefs, and village elders.

As of the time of this report, details regarding the cause of his death remain undisclosed, and the family is yet to issue an official statement on funeral arrangements.
