The Kaduna State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has firmly denied claims made by former governor Nasir El-Rufai that the party’s entire structure has merged with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a strongly worded statement issued in Kaduna on Monday, the State Chairman of the SDP, Adamu Idris, described El-Rufai’s comments as “spurious, misleading, and politically mischievous.”
Idris emphasized that the SDP remains active and intact across all 23 local government areas in the state, and that there had been no discussions or agreements to join any coalition led by El-Rufai.
“The attention of the leadership of the SDP in Kaduna has been drawn to a reckless statement credited to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai claiming our entire structure has collapsed into the ADC. This is completely false and laughable. At no point did such a decision occur,” Idris stated.
He went further to criticize El-Rufai, accusing him of attempting to destabilize the party for personal political gain.
“El-Rufai is not a democrat. His brief presence in the SDP brought crisis and division. Since his departure, the party has regained stability and focus.”
According to Idris, those who appeared at the coalition meeting with El-Rufai were either expelled or had no authority within the party.
“These individuals are impostors seeking political favour. They have no mandate to speak for or represent the SDP in Kaduna State.”
El-Rufai had claimed over the weekend that the SDP in Kaduna had formally merged with the ADC during a “strategic coalition meeting” held in the state capital.
The meeting, chaired by El-Rufai, included opposition stakeholders from various parties, with a joint statement issued by coalition spokesperson Darius Kurah affirming the merger.
“We believe only a broad coalition can rescue Nigeria. The SDP’s decision to join us strengthens our platform for 2027,” Kurah had said.
In response, the SDP dismissed the announcement as false and assured supporters of the party’s continued independence.
“We remain committed to building the SDP as a credible alternative for the people of Kaduna and Nigeria at large. No amount of misinformation or political propaganda will derail our mission,” Idris concluded.
