The Kogi State Police Command has apprehended a herder, Jato Jaye, for allegedly killing his 11-year-old son, Buhari, in the Agbaja area of Oworo, Lokoja Local Government Area.

Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the incident via X on Tuesday.

According to him, the boy had gone grazing with his father on August 19 but never made it back home. His mother, Adama, raised the alarm when her son did not return, leading to a search effort that eventually uncovered the child’s lifeless body in the bush.

He wrote, “Sources told Zagazola Makama that on August 19, one Zuberu Adamu of Fulani bush camp, Agbaja village, reported to the police that his sister, Adama Adamu, complained she had not seen her son, Buhari Jato, who went for grazing with his father, Jato Alhaji Jaye, since August 17. A search party was immediately raised, which led to the discovery of the lifeless body of the boy in the bush. The father was reportedly found at the scene attempting to bury the body in order to conceal his act.”

Operatives from Division B, Lokoja, reportedly visited the site, documented the case, and arrested the suspect. The child’s decomposing body was later released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

During interrogation, Jaye was said to have confessed to the crime, claiming his son “offended him” while grazing. He allegedly admitted to using a Fulani stick to beat the child, which caused his death.

“Sources said the case would soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lokoja, for further discreet investigation,” Makama added.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, William Aya, did not respond to calls placed to his mobile phone. A text message sent to him also remained unanswered at the time of filing this report.
