The Imo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to pay a new minimum wage of N104,000 to civil servants, beginning with August 2025 salaries.

Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Governor, Mr. Oguwike Nwachuku, gave the assurance on Thursday while speaking on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief.

He explained that the wage increase, recently announced by Governor Hope Uzodimma, is not a populist move but a carefully planned decision backed by strong financial growth in the state.

“When this administration came on board, Imo’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) was less than N400 million. Today, we are talking about N3 billion to N4 billion monthly. This remarkable growth is due to blocking financial leakages, digitising government processes, and creating an enabling environment for investment,” Nwachuku said.

The governor’s aide stressed that the improved revenue base gives the government confidence in its ability to sustain the new wage, despite skepticism from some quarters. He noted that investments in a digital economy and infrastructure projects, including the construction of 46 roads across the state, further demonstrate the administration’s prudent management of resources.

He also dismissed claims that the wage increase was politically motivated, insisting it was reached after careful consideration of the state’s financial realities.

“The new wage structure will take effect with August salaries, while consequential adjustments for other cadres of the civil service will follow in subsequent months,” he clarified.

The announcement by Governor Uzodimma earlier in the week had drawn both excitement and doubt, but the government insists that the step is both realistic and sustainable.
