President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to eradicating poverty in Nigeria, insisting that the nation’s abundant human and natural resources leave no justification for widespread hardship.

Speaking on Wednesday at the 8th Expanded National Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Clinic in Calabar, Tinubu represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized the federal government’s dedication to empowering MSMEs across the country.

He pointed to Cross River State as a prime example of untapped potential, highlighting its fertile land capable of supporting the cultivation of virtually any crop.

“The Federal Government plans to plant 100 million oil palm trees, more than any other state. Cross River has a clear advantage,” Shettima noted.

Tinubu recalled that from the outset of his administration, expanding access to capital and supporting innovation in work, skills, and enterprise development had been top priorities.

He commended the state government for establishing a modern communication and technology hub designed specifically for MSMEs.

The facility offers affordable high-speed internet, advanced equipment, and collaborative workspaces to foster innovation and skills development.

“The digital economy includes everyone from the market woman in Ikom to the furniture maker in Calabar and the fashion designer in Ogoja, Ugep, or Odukpani,” he said.

“Our Renewed Hope Agenda is about creating the right environment for MSMEs not just to survive, but to thrive. We are building a support system that offers critical infrastructure and encourages entrepreneurial creativity.”

Governor Bassey Otu described the MSME Clinic as a collaborative initiative between the federal and state governments aimed at stimulating entrepreneurship and driving economic growth.

He revealed that, through the state’s Micro Finance and Enterprise Development Agency, over 3,500 entrepreneurs have been trained in various business disciplines. Otu stressed the vast potential of MSMEs to raise living standards if properly supported.

Also speaking at the event, Pius Neji, Head of the Bank of Industry (BOI) in Cross River, pledged the bank’s continued support for rural enterprises. He disclosed that ₦260 million had already been disbursed to MSMEs in the state.

“Cross River has what it takes to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s development. Its industrial growth can help elevate the nation,” Neji stated.
