In a significant political realignment, more than 200 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have officially joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Sakwaya Ward, Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State.

The defection took place on Friday at the PDP ward office, where the party’s deputy state chairman, Umar Danjani, stood in for the state chairman to formally welcome the new members.

Danjani expressed his enthusiasm over the large turnout, describing the move as a major boost to the PDP’s strength ahead of the 2027 elections. He assured the defectors of his support as they integrate into the party, emphasizing the PDP’s dedication to grassroots mobilization and community-driven progress.

“Today marks a significant moment in our journey as a party. We warmly welcome you and promise to work alongside you to address your needs,” Danjani said, calling for a peaceful and democratic approach as the election season approaches.

Mamuda Sakwaya, a prominent PDP member and ward leader, also spoke at the event, highlighting the growing influence of the PDP at the grassroots level. He praised the defection as a sign of the party’s increasing strength in the region.

“We are proud to welcome those who have chosen to align with the party of the people,” Sakwaya stated, celebrating the event as a new beginning for the PDP in Jigawa.

Mrs. Harira Sakwaya, the leader of the defectors and wife of the APC ward chairman, explained her decision to leave the APC, describing her time with the party as disappointing.

“We are deeply grateful to Sule Lamido for his tireless support of Sakwaya and the women here. His contributions to our community have been invaluable,” Mrs. Sakwaya said, adding that many members were leaving the APC due to unmet expectations.

The defection included 273 women and 16 men, signaling a notable shift in political allegiance within the region.

With this influx of new members, the PDP’s influence in Jigawa is poised to strengthen significantly as the 2027 elections draw nearer.
