Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called for renewed public confidence in Nigeria’s transport infrastructure following Tuesday’s derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna train.

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi expressed sadness over the incident and extended his sympathy to those injured.

He also stressed the importance of sustained investment in the nation’s rail system, describing it as a critical component of national development.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the Abuja–Kaduna train derailment today; my heartfelt prayers are with the injured and all affected,” Obi wrote.

“The rail transport system is a critical component of development, and we must continue to embrace it. I urge the authorities to act swiftly to provide adequate medical support to the injured, ensure accountability, and restore confidence in our transport infrastructure.”

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed that 583 passengers and 15 crew members were on board the train at the time of the incident.

According to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, six people sustained injuries, though no fatalities were recorded.

The derailment has once again raised concerns about safety and oversight in Nigeria’s rail sector.
