PETER-OBI

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has defended his pledge to serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027, rejecting claims that his promise is desperate or unrealistic.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter) Tuesday, Obi explained that his single-term commitment is driven by a sincere desire to rebuild Nigeria rather than personal ambition.

“I find it surprising that my decision to serve only one term is causing so much debate. Does it mean we doubt that a dedicated leader can make meaningful progress in 48 months?” Obi questioned.

Addressing accusations of desperation, the former Anambra State governor denied displaying any typical signs of political desperation.

“I have never been desperate for power or anything else. Traits like aggressive rhetoric, paranoia, unrealistic promises, personal attacks, or flip-flopping policies have never been part of my political conduct,” he said.

Obi stressed that his political approach prioritizes principles and civility over power struggles.

“I have never been involved in thuggery, ballot snatching, or election fraud. I invite anyone to investigate there will be no evidence linking me to rigging or violence,” he added.

The Labour Party candidate said his one-term pledge is both sincere and feasible, asserting that key reforms within four years could significantly change Nigeria’s future.

“In just four years, we can tackle corruption head-on and redirect funds from unnecessary expenses such as presidential jets toward education, healthcare, and infrastructure,” Obi argued.

He also promised to strengthen the rule of law and ensure free, fair, and credible elections within that timeframe.

For Obi, leadership is about delivering real results, not personal gain.

His one-term vow has sparked widespread discussion ahead of the 2027 elections, drawing both support and criticism.
