Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has come under political fire after announcing he has donated over N650 million to education and humanitarian projects across 11 Nigerian states since January.

In a series of posts shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi explained that the donations made in states including Anambra, Ebonyi, Cross River, Enugu, Kaduna, Edo, Borno, Abuja, Abia, Plateau, and Imo reflect his continued dedication to human capital development.

“We must continue to support health, education, and poverty alleviation to build a sustainable future,” he wrote.

However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from political rivals. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-East National Vice Chairman, dismissed the donations as a “politically desperate” ploy to remain relevant ahead of the 2027 elections.

“When did it become Obi’s habit to share money? Our people see through his desperation,” Arodiogbu told Saturday PUNCH, alleging that Obi has historically ignored local youth and is only now feigning concern.

In response, Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, defended Obi, describing the backlash as politically driven.

“Obi has always been involved in humanitarian causes even before entering politics. He supported Haiti during their earthquake crisis,” Tanko said, urging critics to focus on their own records.

“Rather than attacking those making a difference, they should show what they’ve done for the people.”

Also defending Obi, Peter Ameh, National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), rejected claims that the donations were politically motivated.

“Obi’s philanthropy didn’t begin with politics. He has supported humanitarian work in places like Afghanistan and Rwanda long before he became governor,” Ameh said, portraying the donations as part of a longstanding commitment to public service.
