Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), in partnership with the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Department of Justice, has confiscated a luxury vehicle a 2019 Lamborghini Urus from popular Ghanaian musician Charles Nii Armah, widely known as Shatta Wale.
In a press release issued on Tuesday by EOCO’s acting Executive Director, Raymond Archer, and shared by Joy News via X, the agency stated that the action was based on a 2023 request from U.S. authorities. The operation, carried out at Shatta Wale’s residence in Trassaco Valley Phase 1, Accra, was conducted by EOCO’s Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU).
According to the statement, the vehicle was linked to criminal proceeds belonging to Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving an 86-month prison sentence in the United States for multiple financial crimes.
The agency reported that Shatta Wale was cooperative during the operation and voluntarily handed over the vehicle. “He asked that the seizure not be made public, as the Lamborghini is a key part of his public image. To avoid embarrassment, he was allowed to surrender the vehicle himself,” the statement read.
EOCO noted that armed officers were present during the operation in line with safety protocol. It further explained that U.S. authorities plan to repatriate the car as part of a $4.7 million restitution order against Amuah.
Shatta Wale and a former high-ranking official of the National Signal Bureau (NSB) are now considered persons of interest in the ongoing investigation and will be invited for questioning.
“The FBI and Justice Department will send a formal Mutual Legal Assistance request to the Ghanaian government for the car’s return,” the agency said, adding that it may submit a final report of the investigation to its U.S. counterparts.
Meanwhile, Shatta Wale has taken to Facebook to criticize EOCO’s approach, accusing the agency’s head of mishandling the situation.
In one of his posts, he wrote, “Raymond Archer, EOCO Boss, you go make NDC go out of power next 4 years. Bringing guns to my house was uncalled for.” He also warned, “The president didn’t put you there to humiliate citizens. God no sleep.”
