President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, on their impressive qualification for the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The defending champions secured their fifth straight final appearance after a hard-fought 75–68 victory over Senegal in Saturday’s semi-final clash at the Palais des Sports in Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the team for their exceptional consistency and dominance in African women’s basketball.
“I have closely followed D’Tigress’ journey throughout this tournament and I am proud of the discipline, unity, and determination they have shown. These qualities have brought honour to our country and earned admiration for Nigerian athletes and coaches globally,” the President said.
He also highlighted the team’s qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers, scheduled to hold in March 2026, as a further testament to their outstanding performance.
President Tinubu extended special recognition to Head Coach Rena Wakama the team’s first female head coach, praising her leadership and impact on the team’s success.
“Rena Wakama has been a tremendous force, guiding D’Tigress with passion and expertise. Her influence both as a former player and now as coach continues to inspire the team and elevate their game,” he noted.
Reaffirming his administration’s support for Nigerian sports, Tinubu encouraged the team to maintain their momentum as they aim to clinch a fifth straight AfroBasket title and their seventh overall.
