The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied reports that Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye (State Code: LA/24B/8325), popularly known as “Raye”, was denied her Certificate of National Service due to her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement released on Sunday, the NYSC described the claims as unfounded, clarifying that Raye is one of 131 corps members whose certificates were withheld for disciplinary reasons not political ones.
“Her service year was extended by two months because she failed to attend the mandatory biometric clearance in April, a requirement outlined in the NYSC Bye-Laws,” the agency stated.
The NYSC stressed that such sanctions are routine and applied equally to all corps members who do not meet clearance obligations. The organization reaffirmed that there was no political influence behind the decision.
Raye had previously sparked controversy after a TikTok video in which she criticized the Tinubu administration and referred to Lagos as “smelling” went viral. She later issued an apology following public backlash.
Her case drew attention from activists, including human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore, who alleged that the delay in her certificate issuance was politically motivated. The NYSC, however, insists the matter is strictly procedural.
The agency urged the public to view the situation objectively and avoid turning standard administrative processes into political controversies.
