A 100-level student of Yobe State University, Damaturu, Amina Yakubu, has died in a road accident that occurred on Saturday near the institution’s main gate.
Confirming the incident in a telephone conversation on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, attributed the crash to diversions on Gujba Road caused by ongoing military operations. He explained that the diversions often force motorists into a single lane, leading to frequent accidents due to impatience among drivers.
He said, “So, yesterday, (Saturday), there was an incident like that. Amina and a few other students got injured. Eventually, Amina lost her life. She was one of the passengers. They were all on board the tricycle.”
Abdulkarim noted that while Amina died from the crash, four other students sustained minor injuries and had since received medical treatment.
In his condolence message to the bereaved family, he said, “The only message is that I condole with the family in the first instance.”
The police spokesperson further used the incident to highlight the need for safer road practices in the state.
“This should be a wake-up call for the entire community that reckless and dangerous driving is claiming more lives every day. My advice is that we need government presence to check the causes of these incidents. Commercial riders should also consider the lives of others and their own first, before anything else. I will also suggest training for most Keke NAPEP riders on how to use their tricycles and other means of transport for commercial purposes,” Abdulkarim added.
Amina has since been buried according to Islamic rites.
