The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ajuji Ahmed, has dismissed speculation that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ahmed clarified the party’s stance on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme. He explained that the NNPP remains open to political alliances but has not decided on any defection.

“I don’t think so. Nothing Kwankwaso said suggests he is leaving the party or preparing to do so,” Ahmed stated. “The NNPP has always maintained that we have options. One of these is the possibility of forming a coalition with any political party that shares our philosophy and objectives. Another option is to continue independently as a party.”

According to Ahmed, Kwankwaso’s recent comments in Kano were misinterpreted. “He merely said that if the APC reaches out to him, he would listen, on the strict condition that they provide firm assurances that the interests of NNPP members, not just his own, will be protected,” he added.

Ahmed stressed that the party’s decision for 2027 remains open and will be guided by what best serves its members and aligns with its core values.
