The re-arrest of a convicted Nigerian, Theophilis Anwana, by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has triggered renewed calls from US citizens for the deportation of criminal migrants.
Earlier reports indicated that Anwana, who was convicted of second-degree rape in Baltimore, Maryland, had been rearrested by immigration authorities.
According to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Anwana was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Bel Air and has been under a final order of removal since September 2021. Despite this, he continued to remain in the US until his latest arrest.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Baltimore field office of ICE confirmed the development, saying:
“Another dangerous criminal illegal alien is in custody thanks to the hard work of ICE @EROBaltimore officers.”
The agency added:
“Nigerian national Theophilis Anwana, who has been convicted of second-degree rape, was arrested on August 29. He has a final order of removal and will remain in ICE custody.”
The arrest quickly drew reactions on social media, with several US citizens demanding stricter enforcement against undocumented migrants with criminal records.
An X user, @TodRevolution, commended ICE but urged for tougher measures, writing:
“While this is good, the fact of the matter remains that all who allowed these criminals to come here should also be arrested. One and two arrests here and there are not enough. We need at least 20,000 illegals to be deported per day. I hope ICE and CBP are not allowing these fu..s to come back into this country again.”
Another user, @tap_gary (Garry Tapperson), reacted tersely: “Deport him.”
Similarly, @Ssodberg (Sarah Soderberg) tweeted: “Very well done @Sec_Noem!! Deport all illegal aliens.”
A user identified as Dream Big America also weighed in, saying:
“Trump was not lying. They flooded our country with all the low-life scum of the earth and the media told us they just want to pick our crops to feed our families. Ridiculous.”
