The national grid experienced a collapse on Wednesday, causing widespread power outages across the country.
This was confirmed in a public notice issued by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) via its X handle on September 10, 2025.
According to the company, the blackout was triggered by a sudden loss of supply from the grid.
The notice read, “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.”
AEDC assured customers that efforts were ongoing to restore supply. “Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your patience and understanding. For further updates or inquiries, call: 08039070070. WhatsApp: 08152141414, 08152151515. Thank you.”
The collapse adds to Nigeria’s long-running struggle with unstable electricity. Records show that in 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times, and over 100 times in the last decade.
In February 2025, another major grid collapse plunged large parts of the country into darkness.
Although the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) granted approvals in April for six firms and one private university to generate and distribute electricity independently, the problem persists.
Interestingly, NERC’s July 2025 report had claimed there was no disturbance in the grid during the first quarter. “There was no incidence of system disturbance on the national grid in 2025/Q1,” the report stated.
