Chelsea have terminated Marc Guiu’s loan spell at Sunderland just three games into the season, recalling the young striker to Stamford Bridge following Liam Delap’s hamstring injury.

Guiu, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona in 2024, made 16 appearances and scored six goals for the Blues last season. He was sent on loan to Sunderland this summer, where he featured three times and found the net once in the Carabao Cup. However, his time with the Black Cats has been cut short after Chelsea and Sunderland agreed to end the deal early.

The decision comes after a major setback for manager Enzo Maresca, whose plans were disrupted when Delap limped off during Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham. Initial assessments suggest the England striker could be out for six to eight weeks, though a longer absence has not been ruled out.

Meanwhile, Chelsea also blocked Nicolas Jackson’s loan move to Bayern Munich, despite the German club agreeing a record €15m loan fee with a compulsory €80m purchase option for next summer. Jackson had already travelled to Germany for his medical, but was recalled once news of Delap’s injury emerged. The Senegalese striker, who was keen on the move, refused to return to London initially, but Bayern eventually withdrew from the deal.

With Joao Pedro in fine form and set to continue leading the line, Guiu is expected to serve as backup, while Jackson now looks set to remain at the club despite being told earlier in the summer he was not part of Maresca’s long-term plans.
