Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja has been officially crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, a milestone that blends tradition, politics and business in Nigeria’s largest indigenous city. His ascension in 2025 highlights the remarkable journey of one of Oyo State’s most prominent figures.

Here are six notable things to know about the new monarch:

Former Oyo State Governor

Ladoja governed Oyo State from 2003 to 2007 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). His administration witnessed both reforms and political upheaval, including an impeachment later overturned by the courts.

Crowned at 81

Born on September 25, 1944, the respected statesman mounted the Olubadan throne at the age of 81, bringing decades of experience in politics, business and public service to his reign.

Highly Educated and Multilingual

A graduate of Chemical Engineering from the University of Liège in Belgium, Ladoja speaks multiple languages, including French, and enjoyed a thriving professional career before venturing into politics.

Seasoned Businessman

Before his political journey, he worked with multinational firms such as Total Nigeria and later built successful enterprises in the oil, gas and shipping industries, cementing his status as a business mogul.

Decades on the Chieftaincy Ladder

Ladoja’s path to the throne spans more than 30 years. He steadily rose through Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy, holding titles such as Jagun Olubadan, Osi Olubadan and Otun Olubadan among others before finally becoming king in 2025.

Staunch Defender of Ibadan Tradition

In 2017, he opposed a controversial reform initiated by former Governor Abiola Ajimobi to elevate certain Ibadan chiefs to kingship. Ladoja challenged the move in court and won, protecting the sanctity of the Olubadan succession system.
