The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji has cautioned local government chairmen to avoid financial recklessness and mismanagement that could undermine the financial autonomy recently granted to councils in the state.

Oyebanji stressed that the purpose of granting financial independence is to enable councils to deliver impactful and people-oriented projects. He warned that this goal would be defeated if funds meant for development are diverted or wasted on frivolous expenses.

The governor issued the warning on Monday in Igogo Ekiti, Ero Local Council Development Area, during an event where he was represented by his deputy, Monisade Afuye.

Afuye also urged Ekiti residents to support Oyebanji’s bid for a second term so his administration’s programmes can continue to spread across communities.

As the June 20, 2026 governorship election draws near, the governor appealed to all eligible residents, particularly those aged 18 and above, to take part in the Continuous Voter Registration exercise of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to secure their right to vote.
