Liverpool have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign striker Alexander Isak in a record-breaking £125 million ($169m) deal. The Swedish forward is scheduled to undergo a medical on Monday, with the move set to be finalised before the close of the transfer window.
According to BBC Sport, the reigning Premier League champions pushed through the deal after weeks of negotiations and earlier setbacks. Liverpool had a £110m bid rejected earlier in the summer, but Isak’s determination to leave St James’ Park and Newcastle’s decision to reinvest in new signings paved the way for a breakthrough.
The 25-year-old striker, who has long been Newcastle’s most valuable asset, made his intentions clear by stepping away from first-team training and accusing the club of breaking promises. He was also left out of Eddie Howe’s pre-season plans amid reports of a “minor thigh injury,” though speculation suggested his absence was linked to the transfer saga.
Newcastle reluctantly sanctioned the sale after securing German striker Nick Woltemade in their own record transfer deal, easing the blow of losing their talisman.
Isak is expected to sign a six-year contract at Anfield, becoming the most expensive player in British football history. His arrival caps a summer of heavy investment under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot, as the Reds aim to defend their Premier League crown and compete strongly in Europe.
