Former Barcelona and Spanish midfield maestro Sergio Busquets has officially revealed that he will retire from professional football at the close of the ongoing Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
Renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Thursday night, stating that the Inter Miami midfielder will hang up his boots in October.
Romano wrote, “Sergio Busquets RETIRES from professional football at the end of the MLS season! Decision made by Spanish midfielder… who’s leaving Inter Miami and professional football in October. Legend and icon of the game.”
Busquets 37, renowned for his exceptional game intelligence, composure and ability to dictate play from the centre of the pitch, later confirmed the report through his Instagram handle. He shared an emotional tribute video with the caption: “A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”
Over an illustrious career, Busquets achieved remarkable success with FC Barcelona, where he won several La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles. On the international stage, he played a pivotal role in Spain’s golden generation, helping La Roja clinch the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
