The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 46-year-old man, Jude Onouha, alleged to be the ringleader of a criminal syndicate that specialised in vandalising luxury vehicles within estates across Lagos while pretending to be security officers.
In a statement posted on X on Saturday, the Command explained that the gang disguised themselves with fake security uniforms and used a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack fashioned to look like a gun to trick estate security guards. This tactic allowed them access to several residential estates under the pretext of carrying out investigations.
Once inside, the syndicate reportedly targeted high-end vehicles such as Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, Mercedes-Benz, and other SUVs, removing essential parts including brainboxes, tapping glasses, wiring systems, side mirrors, and control units.
Items recovered from the suspect included the fake weapon — a Mercedes-Benz car jack — and a face cap inscribed with “Special Force,” which he allegedly wore as part of his disguise.
Confirming the arrest, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, described it as a major win against organised crime.
“The suspect has already corroborated his involvement in the crimes and is assisting our detectives with ongoing investigations. Efforts are being intensified to arrest the other fleeing members of the gang so they can face the full weight of the law,” CP Jimoh stated.
The Commissioner further cautioned residents and estate managers to be more security-conscious.
“We advise residents and estate management to exercise utmost caution whenever individuals present themselves as security operatives. Always verify their identity with the Divisional Police Officer in charge of your area before granting access. Where there is doubt, refer such persons to the nearest police division immediately,” he added.
The Police Command reiterated its resolve to safeguard lives and property in the state and encouraged continued cooperation with security agencies. It also assured that investigations are ongoing and that other members of the gang would be apprehended and prosecuted.
