Former Arsenal academy forward Billy Vigar has died at the age of 21 after suffering a severe brain injury during a match.

Vigar, who was playing for Chichester City FC in the Isthmian League Premier Division, sustained the fatal injury in Saturday’s fixture against Wingate & Finchley. Local reports suggested he may have collided with a concrete wall, though the club has not confirmed the cause.

His family announced on Thursday that Vigar was placed in an induced coma following the incident. “On Tuesday, he underwent surgery in the hope of aiding his recovery. Although the procedure helped, the injury proved too severe and he passed away on Thursday morning,” the statement read, adding that the overwhelming messages of support reflected “how much Billy was loved and respected in football.”

Vigar joined the Arsenal academy at 14 after being scouted from hometown side Hove Rivervale FC and left the Gunners in 2024. He also had spells with Derby County, Hastings United, and Eastbourne Borough.

In a tribute, Arsenal said: “Billy will always be remembered for his passion for the game, pride in representing our club and a character cherished by team-mates and coaches alike. Our deepest condolences go to the Vigar family and his many friends at this very difficult time.”

Derby County, Hastings United, Eastbourne Borough and the Football Association also expressed their shock and sympathies.

Chichester City confirmed Vigar’s passing and announced that Saturday’s scheduled match against Lewes has been postponed and will be rearranged.
