The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Phyna, following a tragic accident involving a Dangote truck and a commercial motorcycle near the Auchi Polytechnic Sports Complex in Edo State.
Ruth, a recent graduate, suffered critical injuries in the August 13 crash, which ultimately led to the amputation of a limb before her passing.
In a statement released on Sunday, FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide conveyed condolences from Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed to the Otabor family, the Students’ Union, and the Auchi Polytechnic community.
“Despite all medical efforts, the female victim has now succumbed to her injuries,” the statement read.
“The Corps regrets this painful loss and reaffirms its commitment to ensuring safer roads across the country.”
Following the incident, the FRSC held talks with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to address safety concerns.
It also intensified collaboration with major transport operators like Dangote, BUA, and others, rolling out driver training and recertification programmes aimed at preventing future tragedies.
The FRSC emphasized that this incident is a stark reminder of the need for collective responsibility in promoting road safety.
“We will continue to strengthen enforcement, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement,” Ogungbemide added.
