The Federal Government has announced that Friday, September 5, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the annual celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In the statement, the government extended congratulations to Muslims in Nigeria and abroad, urging them to live by the Prophet’s teachings of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

It further encouraged Nigerians across religious divides to use the period of the festival to pray for peace, security, and stability in the nation while backing government initiatives aimed at strengthening unity and promoting development.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration,” the statement added.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, which falls in the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi’ al-Awwal), is traditionally marked with prayers, processions, lectures, and charitable acts. In Nigeria, it is recognised as a national holiday, underscoring both the significance of the Muslim population and the country’s history of observing major Islamic festivities.

The commemoration also provides an opportunity for government officials and religious leaders to advocate peace and unity, especially at a time when the country continues to face economic and security challenges.
