Former Oyo State governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, has officially ascended the prestigious throne of Olubadan of Ibadanland as the 44th monarch in a colourful traditional ceremony.
Ladoja was first decorated with the symbolic Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, before receiving his crown at the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area. He will later be formally presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde at the historic Mapo Hall.
His emergence follows the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who died on July 7, 2025.
The ceremony attracted a large gathering of dignitaries and residents dressed in vibrant traditional outfits. Notable guests included the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye; former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun; and the Chief Imam of Ibadan.
Security was tight, with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Army personnel ensuring a hitch-free event.
The Olubadan stool is renowned for its well-structured and peaceful succession process, which makes it one of the most respected traditional institutions in Nigeria.
