The Elders Caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has unanimously resolved that the party’s next governorship candidate should come from the Kwara North Senatorial District.
The decision was announced on Friday at a press briefing in Ilorin by the caucus chairman, Kunle Sulyman, alongside other senior members.
Sulyman recalled that in November 2022 the caucus publicly backed Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, from Kwara Central, to complete two terms, which would bring the zone’s total years in the governorship seat to 20, while Kwara South has already produced a governor for eight years.
“We appreciate His Excellency, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq CON, for making us proud with his remarkable performance across the state,” he said. “In the interest of fairness, equity and justice, we unanimously agree that the next APC governorship candidate should emerge from Kwara North Senatorial District.”
The chairman noted that the decision followed several consultations across all three senatorial districts. While emphasising that every party member has the constitutional right to contest, he maintained that history has shown candidates who ignore zoning arrangements rarely succeed.
“Our conclusion is guided by what will benefit the entire people of Kwara State,” Sulyman added.
On the governor’s ongoing Urban Renewal Programme, the elders advised residents affected by the project to seek redress through appropriate government channels or the courts, instead of allowing themselves to be used by opposition politicians to create unrest.
They also urged the state government to listen to the concerns of residents and mitigate the temporary discomfort caused by the development projects, which they described as part of the New Ilorin City Master Plan.
“It is obvious that every developmental policy or project may initially cause some inconvenience, but the long-term gains will outweigh the temporary discomfort,” the elders said.
The caucus commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting key infrastructure projects in the state and pledged their total support for his administration.
In addition, the elders called on all eligible voters especially those who have relocated, lost their cards or are yet to register to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise.
“Your vote is your weapon and your voter’s card is your instrument for electing good leaders,” they emphasised.
