The Ondo State Government has suspended three senior officials of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for their alleged roles in a recruitment scam involving the recent hiring of teachers.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa ordered the suspension of two directors and a deputy director pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation into the alleged job racketeering.
According to reports, the officials were accused of collecting between ₦500,000 and ₦700,000 from unsuspecting applicants, the amounts that varied based on academic qualifications in exchange for fake appointment letters.
The scandal came to light after some individuals staged a protest, claiming they had been unfairly excluded from the biometric verification exercise for newly recruited teachers. Investigations later revealed that many of the protesters had presented forged appointment documents.
In a statement through the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, clarified that the protesters were not among the over 2,000 teachers legitimately recruited and deployed across the state.
Adeniyan explained that internal investigations uncovered a scheme in which the three officials allegedly conspired with external collaborators to issue fake appointment and posting letters to applicants in return for payment.
“The attention of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been drawn to reports of a protest by individuals claiming they were unjustly excluded from the SUBEB recruitment process. To be clear, those protesters were not genuine employees but victims of fraud who were issued fake letters after paying money to scammers. They were exposed during biometric verification and informed that their documents were invalid.
“Disciplinary action has already been taken against the three SUBEB insiders found to have conspired with outsiders in defrauding applicants,” Adeniyan stated.
