Mohamed Salah has publicly criticised a Liverpool fan account on X (formerly Twitter) after it posted what he described as a disrespectful comparison between the club’s recent big-money signings and two former teammates.

Liverpool made headlines during the just-concluded transfer window, shattering records with the £116m signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen before breaking the British transfer record again with a £125m swoop for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. Their spending spree contributed to the Premier League’s record-breaking £3bn summer window.

Despite the club’s heavy investment, an independent fan account, @AnfieldEdition, drew controversy by posting a collage contrasting the new arrivals with Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz, both of whom left Anfield this summer. The post featured the departed duo in black and white alongside coloured images of Wirtz and Isak, a gesture Salah felt demeaned his former teammates.

Núñez joined Saudi club Al-Hilal in a €53m (£46m) deal, ending a turbulent three-year spell at Liverpool after arriving from Benfica in 2022 for a then-record £64m, potentially rising to £85m with add-ons. His time at Anfield was marked by inconsistency and criticism, but he still left as a Premier League and Champions League winner.

By contrast, Díaz moved to Bayern Munich in a £65.5m deal after establishing himself as a key attacking threat under Arne Slot, often playing as a false nine.

Liverpool’s overall transfer activity was extraordinary. The Reds spent a Premier League-record £446m, bringing in Hugo Ekitike (£79m) and Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m) to replace Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid. Sales generated £228.1m, with the total potentially higher once add-ons are factored in.

Had Marc Guehi’s £35m move from Crystal Palace not collapsed on deadline day, Liverpool’s outlay would have reached nearly £470m, with Milos Kerkez (£40m) and Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m) also added to the squad.

While most Liverpool fans hailed the club’s business as a near-perfect window, Salah condemned the online comparison as an unnecessary attempt to belittle two players who contributed significantly during their time at Anfield.
