The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that over 2.5 million Nigerians have completed their online pre-registration for voter cards since the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise began on August 18, 2025.

According to INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, 2,532,062 Nigerians had successfully pre-registered online by August 31.

INEC revealed that 51.88 percent of registrants are female, while 48.12 percent are male. The majority 63.29 percent are aged between 18 and 34, with students making up over 25 percent of the total.

The commission emphasized that online registration is only the first step and must be finalized in person for it to be valid. Registrants must visit one of INEC’s 811 offices nationwide to complete biometric data capture.

Osun State once again leads in the number of online pre-registrations with 474,372, followed by Lagos and Ogun States. The Federal Capital Territory and Borno round out the top five.

In-person registration, which began on August 25, has already seen over 72,000 citizens complete the process. Of this figure, young people again dominate, with 75.71 percent aged between 18 and 34.

INEC commended the enthusiasm shown so far and acknowledged the role of civic organizations in mobilizing citizens.

It also addressed allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which questioned the high figures from Osun. INEC dismissed the claim as unfounded, citing the state’s consistent record of civic engagement in past registration drives.

The commission advised political parties to verify facts before making public accusations and instead focus on encouraging eligible Nigerians to register.
