The event, with the theme “Fall Prevention, Spinal Cord Protection,” focused on raising awareness about falls as one of the leading causes of spinal cord injuries (SCIs) and promoting preventive measures.
As part of activities marking the day, SCIAN Osun organized awareness and sensitization campaigns across the state. The campaigns emphasized simple but effective strategies to prevent falls in homes, workplaces, and public spaces, with particular focus on children and the elderly.
Chairman of the chapter, Mr. Yusuf Olatoye, highlighted the devastating effects of spinal cord injuries on individuals, families, and society. He stressed that most cases are preventable if people adopt safety-conscious habits.
“A vast number of spinal cord injuries are preventable, and falls are a major contributor,” Olatoye said. “Our mission today is not just to celebrate, but to empower our communities with the relevant knowledge to protect themselves and their loved ones. By adopting simple safety habits, we can significantly reduce the incidence of these life-altering injuries.”
The association also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Persons with Spinal Cord Injuries (PSCIs) through advocacy, rehabilitation, and community-based support networks.
The event concluded with a call to action for government agencies, health professionals, and the public to prioritize spinal cord protection through fall prevention, while working to build a more inclusive and accessible society for PSCIs.
