President Donald Trump announced Friday that the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been taken into custody following an extensive manhunt.
“Someone close to him turned him in,” Trump told Fox News. “This individual, a minister and man of faith, brought the suspect to a U.S. Marshal. They then proceeded to police headquarters, where the suspect was taken into custody.”
Kirk, 31, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a vocal Trump supporter, was shot once in the neck on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. Police report the shooter fired from a rooftop approximately 200 yards away.
More than 20 law enforcement agencies and hundreds of officers participated in the search. Surveillance footage showed the suspect fleeing the scene and dropping a high-powered bolt-action rifle.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed the state will pursue the death penalty.
Kirk’s coffin was transported to his hometown Phoenix aboard Vice President JD Vance’s official plane, highlighting the political weight of the incident.
Students and supporters expressed shock and grief, holding a vigil at Orem Park, many wearing MAGA caps and waving American flags.
Known for his conservative activism and strong social media presence, Kirk championed anti-immigration policies, Christian values, and gun rights.
Despite widespread anger among right-wing circles, Trump called for peace among his supporters.
