The UK government has announced plans to outlaw the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks, such as Red Bull, to children under 16 in England.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who revealed the policy on Wednesday, said it was designed to protect young people’s health.

“Preventing children from purchasing these drinks is a step toward building healthier and more successful generations,” he stated.

Government data indicates that about one in three adolescents between 13 and 16 regularly consume energy drinks, some of which contain more caffeine than two cups of coffee.

Although major supermarkets already follow a voluntary ban, the government intends to make the restriction legally binding across the country.

Streeting added: “How can students perform well in school if they’re fuelled daily by the equivalent of a double espresso? This measure directly addresses parental and teacher concerns over health and academic challenges.”
