The Balogun of Ibadan-designate, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, has explained why the emergence of the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has been free of controversy, unlike in previous transitions.

Speaking with The PUNCH, Oba Ajibola highlighted the contrast between the current process and that of the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin. He noted that Ladoja’s ascension has been marked by unity among the kingmakers and a smooth, uncontested process.

Ajibola recalled that during Oba Olakulehin’s emergence, there was uncertainty due to the monarch’s prolonged absence and unconfirmed health status following the passing of Oba Lekan Balogun. At the time, Ajibola, who was Otun Balogun, had urged caution, stating that the throne should not be ascended hastily.

In contrast, Ajibola praised Ladoja’s proactive approach, which included open and timely communication with kingmakers. According to him, this transparency played a key role in ensuring a peaceful transition.

“Back then, we only had concerns because the previous Olubadan had just been buried. It wasn’t about disagreement — it was about timing. But in Ladoja’s case, there’s been total harmony,” Ajibola said.

He added that after Oba Olakulehin’s passing, Ladoja immediately reached out to the kingmakers, ensuring that everyone was carried along, which eliminated any room for dispute.

“There is no problem whatsoever. The process is clear and divinely ordained. The throne belongs to whoever God has destined,” he said.

Ajibola also addressed a potential area of contention — the issue of the crown. He affirmed that Oba Ladoja had resolved this long ago by accepting the crown under the amended 1957 Chieftaincy Declaration, which removed any ambiguity.

“So why should there be conflict? Everyone knows it’s his turn. The succession order is clear, and we even know who comes next,” he added.

The Balogun-designate commended Ladoja’s political background and expressed optimism about his reign, noting that his combination of political and traditional experience would benefit Ibadan.

“Ibadan will be great under his leadership if he works with the people and applies his experience. We are all happy — the people of Ibadan, and even beyond,” Ajibola said.

He congratulated the Olubadan-designate and expressed gratitude for the peace the city has enjoyed during the succession process.

Oba Ajibola also spoke on the uniqueness of the Ibadan succession system, which has helped avoid conflict in transitions. He explained that the Olubadan throne alternates between two ruling lines: the Otun and the Balogun.

“Ibadan is like a kingdom on its own. We are fortunate not to have succession disputes because our system is straightforward. Right now, it’s the Otun line’s turn,” he stated.

Oba Ajibola concluded by reaffirming that Oba Ladoja’s emergence as Olubadan was destined by God.

“There is a foundation for everything, and what God has destined will always come to pass.”
