Veteran Nollywood actress, Ronke Oshodi Oke, has credited YouTube with addressing long-standing issues around royalties and marketing in the Nigerian film industry.
Speaking on the Nollywood on Radio podcast, the 51-year-old actress explained that, in the past, producers and actors struggled to receive ongoing financial returns from their films.
“Before, it used to be very difficult to get royalties when you produce a movie. We have been managing and trying,” she said.
According to her, YouTube has transformed the industry by giving filmmakers full control over their projects, from production to distribution while ensuring they retain all associated earnings.
“Thank God now that you have your own YouTube. You are your own marketer, your own producer, your own executive producer; you do everything on your own. You are not owing anybody, and nobody is owing you. That is why everyone is having their own YouTube channel,” she added.
Born Ibironke Ojo-Anthony, Oshodi began her career with the drama group Star Parade. She rose to prominence in 2000 after starring in the film Oshodi Oke, which also gave her her popular stage name.
In 2023, the actress revealed that the demanding nature of her acting career had affected some of her past relationships before her marriage.
