As the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State draws closer, all candidates in the race are set to sign a peace accord to ensure a violence-free and credible poll.

The National Peace Committee (NPC), through the Secretariat of The Kukah Centre, made this known during a pre-election meeting with stakeholders in Awka.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of The Kukah Centre and Head of the NPC Secretariat, Rev. Fr. Atta Barkindo, said the peace deal would involve all 16 political parties participating in the election.

“We at the Kukah Centre have come to work with those who understand Anambra’s social and cultural realities. Our goal is to help consolidate the peace that already exists here,” Barkindo explained.

He revealed that members of the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), would be in Anambra next week for the formal signing of the peace accord.

According to him, the peace pact gives the committee the moral authority to intervene and mediate in case of post-election disputes.

Barkindo also dismissed widespread claims of insecurity in the state, describing many of the reports as “rumours, misinformation, and outright lies.”

He urged political leaders and citizens to remain committed to preserving peace for future generations, saying, “We have a moral responsibility to pass a peaceful state to the generation unborn. The state will outlive all of us.”

On the committee’s expectations, Barkindo expressed optimism that the Anambra election would set a new standard under the new INEC leadership.

“Our hope is for a credible, transparent, and peaceful election. We are counting on INEC to deliver and on security agencies to prevent any unforeseen disruptions,” he said.

He also appealed to candidates to conduct themselves with dignity and discourage violence among their supporters.

“Nobody’s blood is worth spilling for an election,” Barkindo warned. “Every candidate should lead by example and allow the law to take its course. Supporters must not take up arms or spread fake news capable of inciting violence.”

He cautioned voters and social media users against sharing unverified election results or doctored images, stressing that such actions could trigger unrest.

“Anambra is known for being progressive, innovative, and peace-loving. We want that same spirit of peace and enterprise to guide the coming election,” he added.

The stakeholder meeting was attended by heads of security agencies, traditional rulers, civil society representatives, media practitioners, and governorship candidates. A draft of the peace accord was also presented during the event.
