Broom traders in Enugu State are recording massive profits following the defection of Governor Peter Mbah from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mbah’s official defection, scheduled for Tuesday, comes after an extended cabinet meeting held on Monday at the Government House, where the governor and all his appointees resolved to dump the PDP.

In a video posted by Mbah’s Media Aide, Dan Nwomeh, cabinet members were seen waving APC flags and chanting praises for President Bola Tinubu. They were also heard declaring, “We are now in APC, Tomorrow is here; it is APC all the way; it is Jagaban all the way.”

Following the news, there has been a sudden surge in demand for brooms — the official symbol of the APC — across major markets in Enugu. According to Leadership Newspaper, the development has caused a scarcity of brooms, with traders unable to meet the rising demand.

A field visit to several markets revealed that new sellers have entered the trade to take advantage of the sudden boom.

A trader, Obinna Maduagwu, said business had been thriving since rumors of the governor’s defection began.
“Honestly, since the rumor started, we have been experiencing a boom in our business. I have been doing supply, and I have been making serious money, I must confess. Many people have joined the business, and all of us are making serious money. I want more people to join the APC so that we will make more money,” he said.

At Kenyatta Market, another seller, Mrs. Ifeoma Obigeri, expressed excitement over the unexpected windfall, saying that her entire broom stock sold out after PDP members reportedly purchased them in bulk ahead of the defection rally.

“My new and old stock finished this morning when some persons believed to be PDP members came to clear the entire broom,” she said.

Miss Ifeoma Ngene, a trader from Amokwe in Udi Market, also confirmed brisk sales, noting that APC women had visited her shop to buy up her entire stock and urged her to restock quickly.

Similarly, at the Artisan Market, Mrs. Grace Okeke said she had sold out completely.
“How I wish this kind of political event would be happening in Enugu daily. As I speak with you, I don’t have a single broom because the APC people came to clear all the brooms for their event tomorrow,” she said.

Broom sellers across Enugu are now preparing for more patronage ahead of the governor’s official defection ceremony, which is expected to draw large crowds of supporters carrying the party’s trademark symbol.
