Nigerian rapper Oladips has alleged that officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) collected ₦10 million from him before releasing him from custody.
The artist, who was arrested in a midnight raid on his estate in November 2024, shared the claim in a recent appearance on the Trending podcast nearly a year after the incident. Oladips said he spent about five days in detention even though investigators found nothing incriminating.
“It was a terrible experience,” he recounted. “They kept us in one smelly place, packed like sardines and gave us horrible food. Funny enough, Zlatan was the one sending me proper food, even though he’s more like my brother than just a friend.”
Oladips lamented that he should never have been detained in the first place, questioning why he was kept for days and forced to pay money despite being cleared of wrongdoing.
“I wasn’t found with anything, no evidence of fraud, nothing. Yet, they still collected ₦10 million before letting me go,” he said. “What was the money for? What was all that suffering about? It’s just Nigeria. Nigeria happened to me.”
When asked if he planned to take legal action against the EFCC, the rapper replied resignedly, “Who is my father? At the end of the day, it’s just me and my truth. I don’t even know how the system works. If I was doing Yahoo, they’d have posted me on their page by now.”
Oladips insisted that his experience is a reflection of the broken state of the system, saying he hopes sharing his story will shed light on what ordinary Nigerians face when dealing with authorities.
