Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has called for calm and focus within his squad as they gear up for a tricky Premier League clash against Brighton, following last weekend’s emotional high at Anfield.
United earned a memorable 2-1 victory over Liverpool, their first win at Anfield since 2016, thanks to a late header from Harry Maguire, marking Amorim’s first back-to-back league wins since taking charge.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Amorim said his players must stay grounded despite the positive momentum.
“We use the good spirit of winning games,” he said. “We know it was a good weekend for us, but our focus has to be on the next game.”
The Portuguese tactician reflected on the fine margins that define football, noting how close Liverpool came to equalising.
“If Gakpo’s header was 20 centimetres lower, the story would be completely different,” he remarked, gesturing to show how narrowly his side escaped. “That’s why we need calm and direction, not to overreact to one result.”
Amorim also acknowledged the pressure that comes with managing a club of United’s stature.
“In a club like this, when you don’t win, people doubt you. But we have to stay clear on our path, not change everything just because of one victory.”
Saturday’s game against Brighton will be a major test, with the Seagulls boasting six wins in their last eight meetings with United, including three straight victories at Old Trafford.
“They are a very complete team,” Amorim warned. “We must be smart and focused in everything we do.”
The match will also mark a special milestone for Bruno Fernandes, who is set to make his 300th appearance for Manchester United. Amorim praised his captain’s passion and leadership.
“He’s a bit different from what I expected,” Amorim admitted. “Everything you read about players isn’t always true. His frustration comes from wanting to help, sometimes not in the best way, but it comes from a good place. He takes every loss personally, and that’s what you want from a captain. He’s a great leader and a fantastic footballer.”
United currently sit ninth in the table, just one place and one point above Brighton.
