Manchester United may no longer dominate world football as they once did but wearing the club’s famous red shirt still carries prestige and pressure.
For some, Old Trafford remains a proving ground; for others, it becomes a stage too heavy to bear.
In recent years, a familiar pattern has emerged, the “post-United bounce” where players who struggled at Old Trafford suddenly rediscover form and confidence after leaving the club. This season, Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Højlund and André Onana have all joined the list of those revitalized by a change of scenery.
Insight Media Sports Arena looks at some Manchester United players that left the club to rediscovered their form
Marcus Rashford – Barcelona
After a frustrating spell marked by inconsistency and low confidence, Rashford’s career has been reignited since joining Barcelona on loan from United. The 27-year-old forward has registered three goals and four assists in his first 10 games, including a Champions League brace against Newcastle United that earned him a standing ovation at Camp Nou.
André Onana – Trabzonspor
Once criticized for costly errors under Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, Onana has found redemption in Turkey. The Cameroon goalkeeper, now on loan at Trabzonspor, impressed immediately and earned Man of the Match honors on debut and providing an assist in his second game.
Rasmus Højlund – Napoli
Frozen out at United after a goal drought, Højlund has quickly reignited his career at Napoli. The 22-year-old Dane has scored four times in six appearances, including a Champions League brace against Sporting CP and a match-winner versus Genoa.
Scott McTominay – Napoli (2024–25)
After limited minutes under Ten Hag, McTominay moved to Napoli in 2024 and immediately became a fan favorite. His high work rate and knack for clutch goals earned him the Serie A MVP award and a league title in his debut season.
Antony – Real Betis (2024–25)
The £82 million winger struggled to adapt in England but rediscovered his flair in Spain, scoring nine goals in 26 games for Real Betis. His performances earned him a LaLiga Player of the Month nomination, and he has since made the move permanent.
Dean Henderson – Crystal Palace (2023–24)
Having made only 13 United appearances, Henderson joined Crystal Palace in 2023 and helped them win the FA Cup while earning his first England cap.
David De Gea – Fiorentina (2023–24)
After 12 years at United, De Gea was released in 2023. The Spanish veteran later signed for Fiorentina, where he played a key role in securing European qualification in 2024.
Earlier Examples of the “Post-United Bounce”
The Inter Milan Contingent (2019–21)
A wave of United departures including Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young, Alexis Sánchez, Matteo Darmian, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan helped Inter Milan to multiple Serie A titles and European finals. Lukaku even earned the 2020–21 Serie A MVP award.
Chris Smalling – Roma
After moving to Roma in 2019, Smalling became a defensive pillar, winning the UEFA Conference League in 2022 under José Mourinho and making UEFA’s Team of the Tournament twice.
Daley Blind – Ajax & Girona
Returning to Ajax revitalized Blind’s career, yielding three Eredivisie titles before stints with Bayern Munich and Girona. The Dutch defender remains active at 35.
Memphis Depay – Corinthians
Depay’s underwhelming United spell ended in 2017, but he thrived at Lyon and Barcelona before lifting the Brazilian Serie A title with Corinthians in 2025.
Ángel Di María – Rosario Central
Signed for a record fee in 2014, Di María lasted one season before joining PSG, where he won multiple domestic and international honors. Now 37, he’s back playing for his boyhood club, Rosario Central.
Wilfried Zaha – Crystal Palace
Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson but rarely used under David Moyes, Zaha returned to Crystal Palace in 2014 and became the club’s talisman, winning three consecutive Player of the Year awards.
From Rashford’s revival in Catalonia to McTominay’s rise in Naples, the pattern continues: leaving Manchester United doesn’t always mark a decline for many but the true beginning of success.
