Newly-promoted Sunderland stunned football fans on Saturday after clinching a dramatic 2–1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Chemsdine Talbi netting a last-gasp winner in stoppage time.
The victory marked a historic moment for the Black Cats, their first league win over Chelsea in nine years. Sunderland last defeated the Blues on May 7, 2016, in a thrilling 3–2 encounter at the Stadium of Light. In that match, Wahbi Khazri, Fabio Borini, and Jermain Defoe were on target for Sunderland, while Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic scored for Chelsea.
Saturday’s win also ended Sunderland’s 14-year drought at Stamford Bridge, where they hadn’t won since April 19, 2014, a match that similarly ended 2–1, with Connor Wickham and Borini scoring, and Samuel Eto’o netting for Chelsea.
The shocking result has sent waves through the Premier League, with Sunderland now sitting second on the table, just two points behind leaders Arsenal.
