Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Monday sworn in Benibo Anabraba as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG), urging him to serve with integrity and avoid misuse of power.
This appointment marks Fubara’s first major administrative move since his return to office following the end of a six-month emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu in March.
Anabraba, a former Minority Leader in the State House of Assembly and ex-Commissioner for Housing, was appointed after being screened by Victor Oko-Jumbo, a factional speaker aligned with Fubara.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Fubara described Anabraba’s elevation as divinely orchestrated, emphasizing the importance of the role.
“You’re not just another appointee — this is a position of honour. Guard it well, discharge your duty responsibly, and protect the interest of Rivers State,” Fubara said. “When you leave office, let it be with honour.”
The governor praised Anabraba’s past performance and dedication, warning that the office of SSG is not a platform for power display but a call to serve.
“We’ve come from a troubled place. Rivers people need reassurance and real leadership. Use this role to help restore trust and stability,” Fubara added.
Fubara’s reinstatement has triggered a wave of appointments as he rebuilds his team after months of political turbulence. The governor, his deputy, and the state assembly were suspended in March under emergency rule, following a fierce power tussle with former governor Nyesom Wike.
During the interim, President Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator. Ibas dissolved the cabinet, suspended Fubara’s appointees, and took control of state affairs until the emergency rule was lifted on September 18.
Following the transition, the House of Assembly requested a new list of commissioner nominees and the 2025 budget for approval, signalling a fresh start for the Fubara administration.
