The Swedish Football Association has officially confirmed the appointment of English coach Graham Potter as the new head coach of the Swedish national football team, following the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson.

Tomasson was sacked after Sweden’s shocking 0–1 home defeat to Kosovo, which further dented their chances of qualifying for the upcoming World Cup.

Potter, who previously managed Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, and West Ham United, has signed a short-term contract that will cover Sweden’s remaining qualification campaign and potential playoff matches in March next year.

According to the Swedish FA, the deal will be automatically extended if Sweden secures World Cup qualification.

Speaking on his appointment, Potter expressed excitement and determination to revive the team’s fortunes.

“I am very honored by this opportunity and incredibly inspired,” he said. “Sweden has fantastic players who perform at the highest level week after week. My task is to create the right environment for the team to reach its full potential and qualify for the World Cup next summer.”

The English coach is not new to Swedish football, having previously worked within the country’s football system earlier in his career.

He inherits a struggling team that has managed only one point from four qualifying matches under Tomasson, leaving Sweden six points behind the playoff spot with just two games remaining.

Potter officially begins his role immediately as Sweden hopes his appointment will spark a turnaround in their World Cup qualification campaign.
