The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has dismissed allegations of bias and irregularities in the recent promotion exercises within the Nigeria Police Force, insisting that all elevations under his leadership were based strictly on merit, transparency, and established procedures.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony for newly promoted senior officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun said attempts by “mischief-makers” to discredit the promotion process were unfounded and aimed at eroding public confidence in the police.

“In recent months, certain individuals have tried to question the credibility of our promotion process, particularly the accelerated promotions conducted a few months ago,” he said. “But truth stands taller than rumours. The Nigeria Police Force has nothing to hide and nothing to defend.”

Egbetokun maintained that every promotion exercise conducted under his administration followed due process and was strictly merit-based. He emphasised that the Force operates on a system that rewards diligence, professionalism, and proven competence rather than favouritism, nepotism, or tribalism.

“There is no place for favouritism or tribal sentiment in the Nigeria Police Force. Promotions are guided solely by competence, performance, and discipline. This philosophy motivates excellence, strengthens morale, and reinforces public trust in the institution,” he said.

The IG, who decorated newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General, Assistant Inspectors-General, and Commissioners of Police, described the ceremony as a reaffirmation of integrity and excellence within the Force.

He congratulated the officers on their elevation, describing it as recognition of their consistency, discipline, and patriotism. However, he reminded them that higher rank comes with greater responsibility.

“Every insignia worn at this level must represent not privilege, but purpose — a reminder that authority is meaningful only when it uplifts the institution and strengthens public trust,” Egbetokun noted.

The police chief urged the senior officers to adopt community- and intelligence-led policing strategies to address emerging forms of crime driven by technology and global trends.

“Nigerians expect a smarter, more responsive police force that is deeply connected to the communities it serves. Harness technology, empower your personnel, and drive innovation to stay ahead of criminal enterprises,” he charged.

Egbetokun also commended President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing support in reforming and strengthening the Police Force, and the Police Service Commission for maintaining transparency in managing promotions.

On October 17, the Police Service Commission approved the promotion of CP Abibo Reuben to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, along with the elevation of 11 Deputy Commissioners to the rank of substantive Commissioners, among others.
