All members of the Enugu State caucus in the House of Representatives have officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made on Thursday by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who read out the lawmakers’ resignation letters from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) during plenary.

The Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, was present to witness the event.

According to the defectors, their decision was prompted by unresolved internal crises within their former parties, which they said threatened the stability of the opposition.

After the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party had won seven out of eight House of Representatives seats in Enugu, while the PDP secured one. With this mass defection, the APC now controls the entire Enugu delegation in the lower chamber.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji (Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency) said the move was driven by the lawmakers’ desire to support Governor Mbah’s “project-oriented administration” and align Enugu with the federal government’s development agenda.

“Come to Enugu and see what is happening,” Nnaji said. “The governor is transforming our state. We want Enugu to take its rightful place at the national level.”

He described the defection as “a bold step into the future”, adding that the decision followed deep reflection and a collective commitment to bring more projects, jobs, and empowerment opportunities to their constituencies.

The defectors include Martins Oke, Anayo Onwuegbu, Nnamdi Agbo, Nnolim Nnaji, and Mark Obetta.

In a related development, Daniel Asama, representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, also announced his defection from the Labour Party to the APC.
